Neuropsychiatry/Psychiatry

A neuropsychiatrist is a physician who works with people who have emotional or behavioral problems. A neuropsychiatrist is a medical doctor who often prescribes medications to help assist people in dealing with intense emotions or behavior. The brain injured individual may be confused and agitated along with suffering with depression. The neuropsychiatrist, because of their medical training, understands the body's functions and the complex relationship between emotional illness and other medical illnesses and may thus use medications to help the individual cope with their problems.

At BBRC, instruction and discussion groups, as well as individual therapy sessions, are provided by the neuropsychiatrist. These highly therapeutic sessions provide the injured individuals with education, feedback, support and monitoring in regards to the nature of brain, head and traumatic injuries and the complexities that frequently follow an injury of this type. Individual and group treatment sessions are directed toward increasing an individual's awareness, understanding and acceptance of the "New Self." This is accomplished by providing education and insight into the nature and mechanisms of physical, cognitive, psychological and behavioral changes and limitations.

The physician is able to monitor and address medication issues, medical concerns with psychiatric issues and provide referrals. He also provides patients with daily education, feedback, and insight into the limitations and difficulties they are experiencing.
